The monitor utility is designed to display information about the current status of the file server. It is intended to help the system supervisor better understand and manage the file server. Using this utility you can track memory usage and see if more memory is needed for your server. You can monitor connection and file usage as well as file locks. One of the nice features of this utility is its ability to lock the console keyboard; when combined with the "Secure Console" console command, your server is safe from someone entering unwanted console commands such as down. Monitor will also display information about how the LAN drivers are configured. It will help you track the disk drives on your system, their status, and which volume segments are located on them.VPN AVAILABLE OPTIONS HELP

Displayed in the lower portion of the screen is the Monitor utility's main menu. The following options are available:

     Connection Information
This option will display a list of the connections to the file
server that are currently in use. When you select a connection
from the connection list, its statistics will be displayed.

     Disk Information
This option will display a list of the disk drives currently
accessible by the file server. When you select a disk drive from
the list, its statistics will be displayed.

     LAN Information
This option will display a list of the LANs currently in use by
the file server. When you select a LAN from the list, its
          statistics will be displayed.
Page 1 of 5PN System Module Information
This option will display a list of the loadable modules that are
currently a part of the system. When you select a module from the
list, its statistics will be displayed.

     Lock File Server Console
This option will disable the change screen option <ALT-ESC> until
the supervisor password is entered. This prevents people from
accessing the console command line or any other part of the Monitor
utility unless they know the supervisor password.

     File Open / Lock Activity
This option will allow you to select any file on any of the mounted
volumes and view the lock information when the file is open.

     Resource Utilization
This option will display memory statistics and allow you to view
system resources and their associated resource tags. When you
select a resource tag, its statistics will be displayed.
Page 2 of 5VPNZInside the Utility header is displayed the OS version as well as the date it
was created. Displayed in the upper portion of the screen are the following file server statistics:

     File Server Up Time:
This is the amount of time that has elapsed since the file server
          was last brought up.

     Utilization:
This is the percentage of time that the file server CPU is being
used. The utilization is low when the file server is not very
          busy.

     Original Cache Buffers:
When the server is brought up, it uses all available memory for
cache buffers. Then when memory is needed, it is borrowed from
the cache buffer pool. This number is the original size of the
          cache buffer pool.

Page 3 of 5PNl Total Cache Buffers:
This is the total number of cache buffers that are currently
available on the system for file caching. They may also be given
to other memory pools as needed.

     Dirty Cache Buffers:
This is the number of cache buffers whose information has been
changed and need to be written out to disk.

     Current Disk Requests:
This is the total number of outstanding requests for all of the
          disks on the system.

     Packet Receive Buffers:
This is the number of buffers used to hold workstation requests
while the Service Processes handle them. Each buffer is slightly
more that 1KB in size. The system will allocate more Packet
          Receive Buffers when needed.

Page 4 of 5PN Directory Cache Buffers:
This is the number of buffers available to the file system for
directory entry caching. More Directory Cache Buffers will be
allocated if the system detects that the current number is
          insufficient.

     Service Processes:
This is the number of processes, "Task Handlers," for workstation
requests. When the workload is too heavy for the current number
of service processes to handle, more will be allocated.

     Connections In Use:
This it the total number of connections in use on the file server
including stations that are attached but not logged in.

     Open Files:
This is the number of currently open files on the file server.
Note that the file server will have the bindery as well as TTS
files open most of the time.

Displayed at the top of the screen are the following memory statistics:

     Permanent Memory Pool:
This is the memory used by processes when they don't intend on
returning it for awhile if ever. When more memory for this pool
is needed, cache buffers are transferred to this pool; these cache
buffers will never be returned to the cache buffer pool. The
directory cache buffers as well as the packet receive buffers are
          contained in this pool.

     Alloc Memory Pool:
This is the memory used by processes when they don't intend on
using it for long periods of time. When more memory for this pool
is needed, it is transferred from the Permanent Memory Pool; this
memory will never be returned to the Permanent Memory Pool. This
is the preferred memory pool for loadable modules to use when
          allocating small pieces of memory.
Page 1 of 3<3PN Cache Buffers:
This is the amount of memory in the cache buffer pool. This memory
is currently being used for file caching. The amount of memory
in this area should be larger that any of the others.

     Cache Movable Memory:
This is memory allocated directly from the cache buffer pool. When
it is freed, it will be returned to the cache buffer pool. It
differs from the Cache Non-Movable Memory in that the memory
manager may move the location of these memory blocks to optimize
memory usage. Volume tables typically use this memory.

     Cache Non-Movable Memory:
This is memory allocated directly from the cache buffer pool. When
it is freed, it will be returned to the cache buffer pool. This
memory is used when large pieces of memory are needed.

     Total Server Work Memory:
This is the sum of all the memory pools.

access it, so don't dismount a drive that contains any mounted
          volumes.

     Removable Drive Lock Status:
This field is only available for removable drives. It contains

     Software Level Verify
The device driver will perform the read after

     Hardware Level Verify
The hardware (DCB or controller) will perform the

Displayed is a list of all selected processes and interrupts along with the overhead for gathering the statistics; note that the extra overhead is only generated while this screen is selected. The information is sampled, processed, and displayed once a second. The following is tracked:

Name: The name of the process (thread) or interrupt number.

Time: For Processes - the amount of time the CPU spent executing code
in the context of that process. For Interrupts - the amount of
time the CPU spent inside the interrupt service routine (ISR)
          associated with that interrupt.

Count: For Processes - the number of times the process ran during the
sample period. For Interrupts - the number of interrupts that
were serviced during the sample period.

Load: The percentage of time the CPU spent in this process or interrupt.
                                                                Page 1 of 2SPN
At the bottom of the screen is an overhead summary. Displayed is the total sample time, the amount of time spent generating the utilization information along with the percentage, and the adjusted sample time - the amount of time available for all the processes and interrupts to use. All the process and interrupt statistics are relative to the adjusted sample time.

Note that the utilization information is generated only when monitor is in this screen. When you enter this screen, Monitor turns on the statistics generation engine in the OS. When you leave this screen, Monitor will turn off the statistics generation engine, and the OS will return to its normal mode of operation.

When the server is idle, the CPU will spend most of the time in the "Polling Process" and the "STREAMS Q Runner Process" if STREAMS is loaded. This can be used as an indication of low CPU utilization. Server Processes are used to service work station requests. If other processes or interrupts have an unusually high percentage of the CPU's time, it may indicate bad hardware, drivers, NLMs, or simply a busy server.
